We Can’t Start Again

“But you can’t start. Only a baby can start. You and me – why, we’re all that’s been. The anger of a moment, the thousand pictures, that’s us. This land, this red land, is us; and the flood years and the dust years and the drought years are us. We can’t start again.” – John Steinbeck

Hello again fans, friends, and fiends of the internet. I want to state right off the bat that this isn’t a review of a game or opinion on what’s going on with the video game industry. Ever since I got back from E3 my life has been in proverbial limbo. Many of you might not know this, but for the last two years I’ve worked in politics as a campaign organizer for various candidates from local to state representatives. The work I was doing was very critical, but it was thankfully flexible enough to allow me to attend events such as E3, PAX, and SDCC.  The job was very stressful at times, but in a good way because it pushed me to become a better communicator and articulate my thoughts in a constructive manner rather than spewing out whatever came to mind.

Leading up to my final campaign I polished my application to IGN, confident that things were finally in motion and that all the hard work I’d put in over the last four years would pay off.  I had a portfolio of articles I was proud of and was promoting myself on YouTube, Twitch and Twitter, along with a resume that was augmented with letters of recommendation from major government officials. For weeks after submitting my application I was constantly frustrated due to not knowing if I had made the cut for my dream job amid 1,500 other applicants. Ultimately we lost the campaign, but what scared me the most was the lack of response to my application.  After debating whether or not to call or visit the IGN office, I looked up Steve Butts (Editor-in-Chief of IGN) on Facebook and sent a half-hearted message, thinking I wouldn’t get a response; to my surprise, he responded within the hour with what was the hard truth.

It wasn’t harsh or vindictive in any way, but it was like a kid finding out that Santa Claus isn’t real. I won’t go into detail about what he said, but I’m thankful that he did. You see, for the last four years I’ve been going at this with no structure or guidance and for someone like him to point out those simple things destroyed my world. For days after I became an emotional wreck debating everything about myself, from my choice in friends, to my work, my joys and my life. It’s really scary at the age of twenty seven not knowing if you can accomplish anything in your life. In my mind it seemed that I’d run out of time and that everything was hopeless. If my life were a movie, this would be the part where someone or something would set me back on the right path and I would be hunky dory.  Life isn’t that cheesy, but something far better happened: I grew the fuck up which has never happened to me EVER!

So what does this all mean? Well, I have a better perspective on my goal and I no longer have any fantasies or delusions holding me back. I’m blessed to have the support of my friends and family to continue my journey.  This is why I’ve changed my Twitter handle from GameOverParra to ContinueParra (also I didn’t want to be confused with GameOverGreggy anymore). Not only that, but I’m determined to write at regular intervals and set deadlines for myself in order to get content out, as well as taking actual writing courses! You can still catch me Monday through Thursday on Twitch, streaming content and improving my on-screen personality. One major thing that I want to work on is posting vlogs on my neglected YouTube channel and collaborating again on funny skits. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your comments.

Atlas Filing for Bankruptcy

Alas, another undeserving publisher is falling to its knees at the hands of financial problems.

The company Index (or Atlus), the publisher of games such as the Persona series, Shin Megami Tensai and, soon, the upcoming game Dragon’s Crown, is facing financial peril. According to Index’s main website, they’ve announced that they’re to undergo civil rehabilitation proceedings.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors held on June 27, 2013, and resolved to make a petition for civil rehabilitation proceedings, to conduct a petition for civil rehabilitation proceedings in the Tokyo District Court in the same day, the Company was accepted was. In addition, from the Tokyo District Court, protective order whose contents payment Prohibition and supervision order at the same date, so has been issued, I will inform you as follows.

It becomes a place where it becomes a situation like this, to apologize for shareholders, customers, business partners, and worry trouble enormously regarding. Everyone of the parties concerned other, and without any excuse, I apologize deeply.

1. Reason and circumstances that led to the petition

Ever since the establishment in 1995, the business revolves around the content and business solutions and digital games business, the Company has earned a profit in a stable manner.

On the other hand, I went to business acquisitions that target the domestic and foreign companies, but the expected revenue does not increase in overseas acquisitions in particular, investment heavy losses occurred. In addition, due to the Corporation Incubator Bank of Japan in September 2010, was to build a small business promotion network that we had participated was bankrupt, the financial health of the participating companies of the network affected by the collapse worse However, many of the investments you have made to the participating companies of the network becomes uncollectible also our own, our financial condition has worsened. In addition, in the second quarter ended August 31, 2013, by, for example reversal of deferred tax assets and provisions for bad debt processing a large amount of generated by the investment, I got into a debt exceeded both consolidated and non-consolidated.

It was a condition that leads to uneasiness from suppliers such circumstances, financial institutions and such like, cash flow is tight. Therefore, it’s up to recently, independent reconstruction leads to judgment and is extremely difficult, and have chosen to take a plunge reconstruction by civil rehabilitation proceedings.

In a nutshell, it’s more of a reorganization, which means they’ll still be in business, but owned by creditors. However, according to Cnet Japan it looks as though they’re looking for a full on buyout of the company, or at minimum, a merger.

It’s sad to see another go if things don’t work out. Here’s to hoping they find someone who’s willing to scoop them up and get them back to their old selves again.

E3 2013 Nintendo!

Nintendo JoyThe first day of E3 was insane for someone who doesn’t have an army of PR reps that can schedule me in months ahead of time. After watching the Sony and Microsoft press conference I knew it was going to be a pain to get  hands-on with both consoles so my first stop was with Nintendo. Something about Nintendo always puts a smile on my face; even through the evolution of gaming they still know, at the core, what the whole industry is about. After reading frantic Twitter and Facebook post about Nintendo Direct, and mind you the stream kept crashing every three minutes, I was eager to get a first look at Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and possibly the new Zelda 3DS game. Right away I was able to get in contact with a Nintendo rep and was escorted to a Wii U station where I knew I would be reunited with my long-legged vixen.

Bayonetta 2The controls and game play for Bayonetta 2 was exactly what I remembered from the first game, but I did go the Gamepad Touch route because I wanted to know if it held up to the precise controlling that Platinum games has  delivered in the past. Mashing away on the touch screen did feel a little off, but with a single swipe I could time my dodges to enter Witch Time and connect with my Torture Attacks. The cinematic of the environment and the enemies come together nicely with all you can expect for this over-the-top action platform, but I would have liked to be focusing on my TV and not always looking down on the Game Pad. Nintendo couldn’t comment on what the basis of the plot was, but it will involve not only the high order of Angels, but the demons of Inferno as well seeing how Jeanne’s soul was capture by them. Next up was the new Mario Kart 8 which was a nice treat to experience. The anti gravity tracks were kind of neat and the return of 12-player online competitive play, hang-gliders, underwater racing and motorbikes which was something I didn’t know was introduced in previous Mario Karts see how the last Mario Kart I played was Mario Kart 64. Wonderful 101 has shaped up nicely with its announcement date of September 15th of this year. Forming into different weapons using the Game Pad touch screen, you cut, slam, whip, and shoot your way through enemies. Collecting power-ups, solving puzzles for platinum coins, and recruiting potential would-be heroes gives a great opportunity for a Wonderful 101 hours of replay-ability, plus the rumored multiplayer mode has me very excited. Lastly I found myself staring at what could be the sequel to my all time favorite game during my childhood Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Everything about the game justified my purchase of a 3DS; from the over the top view of the original SNES game, the new game mechanic becoming a portrait is easily something that I became obsessed with trying to look for heart containers, and finally button control no more motion controls in a Zelda game PRAISE THE SUN!

There’s plenty more so stay tune for more E3 2013 memories.

Bro Team in Hot Water?

Recently, Machinima released a video showing Bro Team and The Last of Us, and decided to use a very hot word that sparks a fire every time it’s used. And as such, it’s getting a lot of hate from the Muslim religion that are most likely caused by extremists, but in my case, it’s hard to tell. I don’t know much about Middle Eastern religion because it’s been off my radar for years, I will admit, and I’ve read and heard so many different sides that I’ve pretty much become neutral. I am not taking its side, nor am I against it. I know that there’s many who don’t accept this kind of backlash who is accepting of Muslims in general.

I am, however, a supporter of freedom of speech, especially when it comes to the internet. When something as big as a religion begins its attempt to overcome someone’s speech, just like the real world, prepare for the masses. Those who don’t put up with the one-sided, short-sighted criticism of simply speaking out.

On the internet, no one gets special treatment.

On the internet, everything is permitted.

Of course, there’s the apology video, but it’s not the kind of apology you’re looking for. It’s more or less getting a point across.
